Well, I did my first 10km last weekend. YEAH!!! It was a great event, the biggest I have competed so far with about 2600 participants in the 10k. The day was pretty amazing with sunshine and little wind. It turned out to be our warmest day so far so it was quite hot with the temperature around 24 C or 74 F. Yeah I know this temperature might be laughable down south but it was really warm here. Give me a nice 9 C or 48 F any day.
When I first started getting into exercise I would always disconnect my pump for everything. This caused huge problems with blood sugars swinging up, falling down, bouncing high again and so on. So when I joined Team WILD, one of the first things was a lot of discussion on keeping your pump on during exercise. I began modifying my training to run and bike with my pump attached. So this race was the first race I have ever done with my pump attached and on. I wasn’t worried about the 10km distance but just about getting low. My sugars were really great that day, running about 5.5 (100) before and after the race. I think my sugars would have been a bit lower but I had quite a bit of Gatorade on the route which I usually don’t drink for a 10k.
Well, my first tri is coming up - June 27th! Getting closer and closer and I’m getting a pretty excited and a tad nervous about it. The route is approximately 2 hours from where I live with some amazing scenery. A group of us “newbies” are going to go practice the route in a week or two just so we’re familiar with the routes and hills. I’m really excited and can’t wait for this! Have my wetsuit but haven’t gone for a swim in it yet which is something I hope to do in the next few weeks. I read a post where someone asked the race director of the triathlon what the water temp is for the race and the joke reply was, “hard to say, the ice is still melting”. Wish me luck!
